Contextual and Exhibition Statement

 As per the Jerwood/Photoworks Awards, the statement should include the following:

o   A statement about your practice and themes that interest you

o   The title, subject matter and approach of the project

o   Proposals of how you would extend the project if selected


My complete portfolio statement aims to answer the above, with the added focus of providing contextual insight into the concept of Remember when. (See Fig. 1)

I recycled sections of the previous statement and altered the exhibition statement to become 'exhibition-friendly'. This statement has been altered to suit less academic viewers, ensuring it appeals to a wider range of audience of those who might attend our exhibition.

Reflection: Group Working

Listed categories of group working (click to enhance image size) Whilst our group did not have a formally assigned leader, I felt a certain sense of responsibility for making this exhibition happen. The sheer number of choices involved within exhibition planning leaves room for disagreement amongst members, a fact worsened by the ever-present anxiety regarding our individual production of work to showcase. However, this experience has granted me a huge learning curve and revealed a sea of do’s and don’ts within exhibition curation. I have reflected upon this procedure (particularly the past fortnight) and noted some aspects of our groups’ success, weaknesses, and target areas of improvement. (See Fig. 1). Exhibition analysis: Merror, by Evelyn Bencicova

Snapshot of Merror  (click to enhance image size) ( original image source ) Perhaps best described by Wiktoria Michalkiewicz, the exhibition curator of  Merror  in Fotografiska, Sweden, Bencicova’s work “ smolders with a feeling of discomfort as well as pleasurable enjoyment and attracts the viewer.”  (Wiktoriami.com, 2018 ) Observing the work displayed in  Merror , Bencicova succeeds in creating a sense of lasting friction. This sense of friction originates from Bencicova’s habit of including eerie details within most of her imagery, however the impressions of which they made upon the viewer (a sense of detachment from reality, normalised absurdity etc.) were further amplified using strategic exhibition methods; Image sequencing and clever light placement tactfully ensured the maximum emotional dialogue (and as such, per her intent the sense of friction) between the photograph and vi...
