A new direction: Jerwood/Photoworks Awards - Project Brief Analysis

Figure 1). The Jerwood/Photoworks Awards

In light of Remember when’s development into a more conceptual/fine art direction, it was recommended that I revaluate the project brief of which I am submitting this project for. After careful consideration, Remember when is considerably suitable for the Jerwood project brief compared to its previous intention for the AOP submission. This recent decision will see tactful adaptations of the project in order meet the criteria for the Jerwood submission.

Jerwood awards are a monumental commission opportunity for aspiring photographers. The winners of this competition are awarded global recognition and with the substantial prize, are enabled to expand their projects and dwell further into their photographic practice.

What are the judges of Jerwood looking for?

Researching into past winners of the Jerwood competition, the judges seem particularly attracted to personal expression, especially the kind which couples with a visual comment on history, geography, or cultural notions. (See Fig 2. for relevant notes) There is also an interest in other media, particularly moving pictures. Interestingly, whilst creativity and original concepts are certainly appreciated, it appears outweighed by greater focus on the general depth of a project. The impact of the founding concept, such as the attention it divulges to a certain community or the extent which the project addresses global issues, seems highly preferential. As with the AOP, a consistency of style is key. There is also great interest in the research aspect of each successful project, whether it be influential sources which composed the idea or statistical information regarding the project’s engagement.

Remember when will adapt to these new focuses. The theoretical research conducted to the writings of Marcel Proust combined with the intense analytical dissection of relevant exhibitions are the backbone of Remember when. As such, Marcel Proust’s relevance will be referenced, with extracts,  in the contextual statement. The research conducted into other exhibitions is particularly advantageous in regard to the brief’s criteria of an exhibition plan to be submitted. The depth of Remember when is emphasised by its quality of personal expression, an aspect which has proved successful for the previous winners of Jerwood. A consistency of style is partially a given due to the medium (colour film ensuring an automatic aesthetic) but is further pronounced through post-processing techniques of ensuring the colour tones match across all photographs.
